We enjoy sharing recent examples of our commitment to make sustainability standard:
recognition
• |
Business Efficiency Award from StopWaste.Org – for excellence in environmental performance and a commitment to sustainable business practices, including: becoming more efficient with the use of materials, preventing waste upstream with innovative materials-based projects, and improving their supply chain to cause shifts in the marketplace in favor of more environmentally responsible products, practices and services. |
products
• |
Topo scrims – manufactured with a new material that is 100% PVC-free and VOC-free. |
• |
Topo mobile lounge – with a recycled content of 17% (as calculated for LEED), the new lounge may contribute 1 point toward LEED-CI, Materials & Resources, Credit 4.1. |
processes
• |
waste reduction – a palette recycling program launched in December, 2005, will divert approximately 2,500 cubic yards of palette material from landfill this year, reflecting a 55% reduction of material to landfill, and an overall diversion rate of about 85%. |
• |
energy conservation – a factory lighting replacement project realizes a 66% reduction per year in electricity consumption for lighting alone – reflecting a 19.5% reduction in our total factory electricity consumption. This also results in 6.48 fewer tons of carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere.* |
• |
material assessment – a new recycled content database was created to aid LEED point tabulation. This database is used to calculate the recycled content of any Metro product specific to materials and finishes, provides data for post industrial and post consumer recycled content, and weights the data to comply with LEED criteria. |
programs
• |
SCS Indoor Advantage™ certification – all of Topo systems products, TeamWork tables (except access base) & wall mounted markerboards, and Detour mobile desks & mobile t-screens are certified for indoor air quality.
|
• |
GREENGUARD certifications – all of Metro's Topo, TeamWork and Detour products are certified for indoor air quality. |
• |
future forests™ – as of this spring, Metro has planted 35,700 trees which yield 16,410,000 sq ft veneer and 3,127,000 bd ft lumber. In addition to renewing resources, trees positively impact the environment by reducing greenhouse emissions through the absorption of carbon dioxide and the return of oxygen to the air – improving air quality. |
• |
education – cross-company educational programs and small environmental projects are designed to continually build awareness throughout our organization. |
