aboutenvironmentfuture forests

The beauty and strength of wood have been hallmarks of refined furniture for centuries, which is why Metro has created a program dedicated to sustaining our forests by regenerating the trees.

future forests, our annual Spring tree planting program, is an initiative designed to replenish the hardwood forests of the United States.  Metro plants cherry, maple and walnut trees to renew the natural resource upon which we, and all future generations depend.

This sponsorship program was created with the Hardwood Forestry Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting hardwood timber growth, sustainable forest management, education and the sound use of renewable resources. The Hardwood Forestry Fund is the only non-profit tree planting initiative which provides a management and harvest plan for every tree it plants.

Through the future forests program, Metro and the Hardwood Forestry Fund have created a partnership for sustainability.

Since 2000, Metro's future forests program has planted:

44,267 hardwood trees
4.064 million board feet of hardwood*
21.221 million square feet of veneer*

* The Hardwood Forestry Fund bases these estimates on the following assumptions: single tree yield estimate is 3,000 square feet of veneer and 200 board feet of lumber; at maturity, 25% of the trees will be considered veneer quality and 75% of the trees will be high quality lumber; 75% of the trees planted will reach maturity due to thinning and survival.
